Rock climbing is a magnificent sport that combines strength, strategy, and self-control, but it relies above all on a golden rule: safety. In climbing, belaying is the human and equipment-based system that allows you to climb without the risk of hitting the ground.
Here is a comprehensive overview of the basic principles, equipment, and best practices for climbing with peace of mind.
1. Fundamental Belaying Principles
Belaying involves managing the rope to catch the climber in the event of a fall. There are two main methods:
• Top-roping: The rope is already set up through an anchor at the top of the route. The climber ascends on one side while the belayer takes up the slack on the other. This is the ideal method for beginners, as the fall distance is negligible (limited to a few centimeters of rope stretch).
• Lead climbing: The climber ascends with the rope, clipping it into protection points (quickdraws) as they go. The belayer must feed out slack to allow the climber to progress, while remaining ready to provide a dynamic catch and lock the rope if a fall occurs. Falls here are more dramatic.
2. Essential Safety Equipment
Safety relies on the reliability of the equipment, which is subject to strict standards (CE and UIAA).
• The harness: Worn above the hips, it must be tightened so that no more than a flat hand can fit between the strap and the body.
• The climbing rope: Dynamic (elastic) to absorb the shock of a fall.
• The belay device:
o Tube/Bucket devices
(e.g., Reverso): Provide manual braking based on friction. o Assisted-braking devices (e.g., Grigri): Automatically lock the rope in the event of sudden tension (note: they never eliminate the need to hold the rope!).
• Screw-gate (or auto-locking) carabiner: Used to connect the belay device to the harness.
• Helmet: Essential outdoors for protection against falling rocks and impacts with the rock face if you flip over during a fall.
3. The Safety Routine: The "Double Check" (Mutual Check)
Before starting a climb, the climber and the belayer must perform a mutual visual check. This is the most crucial step for preventing accidents caused by inattention.
What the belayer checks on the climber:
1. The knot: Is the figure-eight knot correctly tied and tightened? Is there enough rope tail extending from the knot (a stopper knot is recommended)?
2. The harness: Is it properly fitted, and are the buckles closed/locked?
3. Rope routing: Does the rope pass correctly through both loops (leg loops and waist belt) of the harness?
What the climber checks on the belayer:
1. The belay system: Is the rope loaded in the correct direction within the device?
2. The carabiner: Is it attached to the harness belay loop and locked?
3. The end-of-rope knot: Is there a knot at the end of the rope (on the ground) to prevent it from running all the way through if the route is longer than expected?
4. Communication: Key Commands
Amidst gym noise or wind at the crag, communication must be clear, concise, and standardized.
• Climber: "Ready?" (Asks if the belayer is attentive and set up).
• Belayer: "Belay on!" or "Whenever you're ready!" (Confirms the system is operational).
• Climber: "Climbing." -> Belayer: "Climb on."
• Climber: "Take!" (Asks the belayer to pull the rope taut so the climber can rest).
• Climber: "Boulder!" » (Warns that they are about to let go and hang on the rope).
• Climber: "Slack!" (Asking for slack to clip the quickdraw while lead climbing).
5. The Belayer's Golden Rule
The brake hand NEVER lets go of the rope.
Regardless of the belay system used (even a Grigri), the hand holding the lower strand (the brake strand) must never leave the rope—not even for a second. This is the absolute foundation of climbing safety.
